The Tasmanian Government has announced significant progress toward establishing a home for Tasmania's first dedicated AFL and AFLW teams, with the construction of the AFL High-Performance Centre and Training Facility at the Kingston Twin Ovals, a part of the new Kingborough Sports Precinct.

Following thorough geotechnical site investigations and environmental and heritage assessments, including planning and construction impacts, the preferred location has shifted from the formerly announced Rosny Parklands / Charles Hand Park to the Kingston Twin Ovals. This decision addresses the environmental concerns at Rosny, preserving its natural assets for community enjoyment while minimising environmental disruption.

A close partnership between the Tasmanian Government and the Tasmania Devils Football Club has been pivotal in selecting Kingston Twin Ovals as the preferred site. This collaboration ensures the facility meets the Club’s requirements and fosters a high-performance environment aligned with AFL standards, as agreed in the AFL deal.

The Kingston Twin Ovals Sports Precinct offers an optimal location with established infrastructure, room for future expansion, and access to the Hobart CBD and nearby communities. This site provides accessibility for athletes and the public while complementing the vision for a state-of-the-art training and administrative hub for our Tasmania Devils.

The project will bring significant economic benefits to the Kingborough municipality and the broader Hobart region. It will create construction and operational jobs, support local businesses through increased activity, and position Kingborough Sports Precinct as a leading sports hub. By attracting visitors and events, the facility will drive economic growth in southern Tasmania.

Designed to serve elite athletes and the wider community, the facility will be accessible to local clubs, youth programs, and community groups. It will provide shared training resources and event spaces, fostering the development of Tasmanian sport and fitness for all.

The centre will meet the AFL’s high-performance standards, offering a professional environment for athlete rehabilitation and development, ensuring Tasmanian players can train locally at the highest level. With the project on track for completion by the sunset date, established under the AFL agreement. Progress is being closely monitored to ensure a timely delivery.

Reflecting Tasmania’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the development at Kingborough will prioritise energy-efficient technologies and minimise ecological impacts. This approach aligns with the government’s dedication to balancing functionality with environmental stewardship.

The AFL High-Performance Centre supports the AFL and the Tasmania Devils mission to grow football participation, strengthen grassroots initiatives, and attract premier sporting events to the state. It underscores the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to advancing AFL and fostering a vibrant football culture for fans and players alike.

Project status update 18 August 2025

The Tasmania Devils football club has formally lodged the development application for the High-Performance Training and Administration Facility with Kingborough Council.

Infrastructure Tasmania continues to maintain a collaborative relationship with the club, providing comprehensive support in the refinement of the detailed design.

The facility will be the home base for the AFL’s 19th team, providing a workplace for on- and off-field staff, as well as a high-performance environment for both AFL and AFLW programs.

Community information sessions were held by Kingborough Council and the Tasmania Devils in recent weeks, giving the public the opportunity to learn more about the proposal and ask questions.

The development application addresses a range of matters, including traffic and parking, stormwater and flooding, noise, bushfire risk, biodiversity and landscaping. It also outlines the facility’s benefits to the wider community and region.

The lodgement of the development application is an important step towards making the Tasmania Devils’ High-Performance Training and Administration a reality.
