Spirit Replacement Update
Berth 3 Construction
Berth 3 wharf works are progressing well on the Spirit of Tasmania Terminal Upgrade at Devonport Wharf.
BMD will soon start installing large steel piles into the Mersey riverbed to support the new ship berth.
The piling work involves specialised drilling equipment and will take place 24-hours-a-day, Monday to Friday, and until 6pm on Saturdays.
No piling is scheduled for Sundays or public holidays, and BMD is actively communicating with the Devonport community.
In addition to the large machines and cranes on site, a 47-metre barge will help drill piles as part of the next stage of works.
Spirit of Tasmania V
On April 11 2025, Spirit of Tasmania V successfully completed its first sea trial.
The first sea trial is a major milestone for any new ship, comprising comprehensive testing of the ship’s systems, performance and handling, emergency manual steering, propulsion systems, and the vessel’s turning circle at full speed.
All tests were completed successfully.
A second sea trial is scheduled for May 2025, allowing for further refinements and validations.
